Building a website can be fun and exciting. You might feel tempted to get creative and experimental. That is great to an extent, sometimes it can be too much and get in the way of an optimized user experience (UX).
What is conversion rate optimization?
Well lets start with what is conversion rate? If you have 100 website visitors and 3 of them become paying customers then your conversion rate is 3%. This percentage can be increased by using strategic design practices that leverage human psychology and user tendencies. It is also crucial that you maintain a high conversion rate by consistent monitoring using heatmaps and A/B testing.
Why does conversion rate matter for your website?
Let me give a hypothetical story.
The average small business owner makes approximately $6,000 per month. The common conversion rate of these websites are 5%. If the conversion rate of these websites were 30% the small business owner would make $36,000 per month. They went from making $72,000 a year to $432,000 a year by just making some changes to their website.
I have created this free website design checklist to help solo business owners like myself to create their website in the most UX optimized way to maximize their conversions. These design practices listed below have helped me service some big brands and plenty small-medium sized businesses
1. Homepage Storyline
The homepage storyline is the story you take your user through on your homepage. Arguably the most important page on your website.
You want to guide your user on an informative journey to lead them to a specific action.
Your homepage should answer the following questions…
- Who? What is the name of your business.
- What? List your services or what you do.
- How? List how you solve your users problems.
- Why? State why your user should choose you (list social proof).
- Now! Finally put a call-to-action in place. (ex. Contact us, Buy Now)
2. Consistency and Repetition
All the pages in your website should be consistent. This creates cohesion between all elements of the website.
Every heading is designed the same, buttons are the same color, and all page designs are relatively predictable.

3. Website Has Contrast
Contrast is all about displaying the difference or importance of each element. This develops an unconscious hierarchy within the design.
Making buttons and important text stand out with contrasting colors, and changing the sizes of important elements to distinguish importance.

4. Blank Space
Blank space helps your elements breath and distinct each other from one another.

5. Balance
Making sure both sides of the page have an equal amount of content.

6. Long Content is Left Aligned
Any text more than a couple lines long should be left aligned for better readability and user experience.

7. Responsive Design
The website should look great across all devices.
Desktop, tablet, and mobile.
